Launch of Fulton Stall Market Celebrates Return of Open-Air Food Market to the Seaport [June 2009] A collection of local produce farmers, a Hudson Valley bakery, New York state wineries, plus a Garden State artisan cheesemaker and a fresh fish purveyor, are among the pioneering vendors slated to sell their goods in lower Manhattan when the Fulton Stall Market opens for the season on Friday, May 22 and Saturday, May 23. The venture marks the return of an outdoor food market within the historic Seaport District. A dozen vendors will occupy the 16 former fish stalls that line South Street between Fulton and Beekman Streets. Open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., the market will enable the public to purchase a wide variety of offerings ranging from seasonal fruits and vegetables, local fish and shellfish, handmade cheeses and organic breads, as well as cut flowers and potted plants. In addition, wines from various New York regions will be featured and available for sampling. Cooking demonstrations by local area chefs are being planned with a focus on pairing local foods with local wines. "New York City residents understand farmers' markets. Markets connect the public with the farmer, baker, purveyor, or chef, and provide them with an awareness of how food is grown, made, handled and ultimately delivered to their tables," says Sara Weeks Dima, Fulton Stall Market manager. A former general manager of The City Bakery, Dima signed on to oversee the Fulton Stall Market, including the selection of participating vendors. "Our goal is to highlight quality farmers and purveyors, as well as create a convenient shopping experience where the public can access fresh foods and exceptional products." With the recent and continuous growth of the residential community in lower Manhattan, Dima hopes the Fulton Stall Market helps address the food needs of people living and working downtown. Currently the area around the Financial District is underserved by farmers' markets. Historically, the area is no stranger to vibrant food markets. The Fulton Market fed New York for centuries. Originally opened in 1822, it was a bustling market that sold vegetables, meats, dairy products and of course, most famously fish. The latter became the mainstay of the area and the stalls located on South Street served as home to the Fulton Fish Market until 2005, when it relocated to Hunts Point in the Bronx. "The stalls remind us of the Seaport's market history. By reinvigorating and reactivating these stalls, we not only bring forward part of our history, we also reconnect it to the local community," says Janell Vaughan, Seaport Senior General Manager. "The market presents a great opportunity for the community to discover and support local vendors by buying their products in a truly unique environment." The Fulton Stall Market will be open Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. and is located on South Street, between Fulton and Beekman Streets.
